Silicone Rubber Classification for Silicone Rubber Molds
General Purpose Silicone Rubber
General purpose silicone rubber has a shore hardness of a 30 to a 70 and is used to make common products such as kitchen utensils and kitchenware. It can be used for compression molding and extrusion of a wide range of products including tubing and vehicle parts.
Low Hardness Silicone Rubber
Low hardness silicone rubber is the softest of the classifications with a shore hardness between a 5 and a 20. It is used to produce baby bottle nipples, food storage film, anti-slip mats, and shoe insoles. The wide use of low hardness silicone rubber is due to its stretchiness, which makes it possible for the material to be pulled and reformed to several times its original size without tearing.
High Hardness Silicone Rubber
High hardness silicone rubber has a shore hardness up to a 90 after being cured. It has high elongation and tear strength and is used for molding, extrusion, and calendaring to make products that are abrasion and fatigue resistant. Products produced using high hardness silicone rubber can be transparent or translucent with exceptionally high tensile strength.

Silicone rubber is a stretchy material that is widely used in industry and home use and has become very much a part of our lives. Because of the stretchy nature of silicone rubber and the way that it faithfully conforms to the contours of whatever it is touching when it cures, silicone rubber is widely used in making molds of all kinds, for all kinds of materials, including food, medical devices, theatrical makeup, hobbies, and even polymer clay and jewelry components. Silicone molds are typically created with something called RTV silicone (for Room Temperature Vulcanizing). RTV silicone consists of two parts that are combined to catalyze a chemical reaction to cause the rubber to "vulcanize" or become polymerized from a very sticky flowing material to a non-stick, stretchy, and durable material. There are many, many types and formulations of RTV silicone rubber mold material, but for craft and hobby uses they are available in two general forms, a pourable silicone rubber and a silicone mold putty.
Silicone rubber is an artificial rubber made chemically from a whole soup of elastomers and polymers. It is not made from natural rubber and therefore does not have the natural rubber proteins that trigger an allergy. So don't worry if you have a latex rubber allergy, you won't have any trouble with silicone rubber.

The setup
Before the mould is made, gating and venting should be considered. The vents and gates allow for the casting material to flow into the rubber silicone mould. The location and the size of the gates are determined by the shape and volume of the master pattern. As a rule of thumb, the greater the volume of the master, the bigger the gate area.
Choosing the silicone rubber
The silicone rubber used today for the moulding process are of two types. Condensation cure (tin base). Addition cure (platinum base). Both the silicone types have slightly different characteristics and properties. When selecting the right silicone rubber for your mould, one of the most important consideration is the silicone rubber resistance to inhibition. Inhibition is a result of any contamination present in or on the master that is to be moulded. A patch test needs to be carried out prior to the moulding process in order to determine or remove any containments present.

How to Extend the Life of Silicon Rubber Molds
Proper Cleaning
After each use, wash the moulds with warm, soapy water and dry them thoroughly before storing them. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers that can damage the surface of the mould.

Store the moulds in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, or moisture. You can also store them in an airtight container or plastic bag to protect them from dust or debris.
